ALWAYS GROWING
Learning is literally my life. I live to learn as much as I can about all things, whether it’s A.I., mobile development, or something completely different like how does a BMX biker do a back flip.
Seeking out learning gives one perspective. Perspective on how to help others. Nothing feels better than lightening someones burden. I am set on computer science because I believe it has a great potential to have the largest positive impact on humanity…..unless…. killer anti-human A.I. come from it.
I am Ben Hibler. Ben from my full name Benedetto. At one point my professional experience wasn’t too different from SpongeBob SquarePants. I was a fry cook at a local McDonald’s in New Mexico. It was there I realized that I wanted more. I wanted to help others. However, I could barely help myself. Like a new sprouting plant, I was young, trying to stretch towards the sun. I worked at DirecTV as tech support and also got my hands dirty and helped rebuild and conserve an 1800’s Fort monument. I wanted to make a greater impact but I had so little fruits to share. I moved to Phoenix, AZ and lived with my brother for a year to find better “soil” to grow some skills. I worked in a local gym as a recreational leader and soon after met some great people who liked me and gave me a job that fundamentally changed who I am.
I was a contractor for a robotics and healthcare company called Vecna. I flew all over the nation working with and meeting thousands of people and a huge range of professionals. From healthcare providers, hospital leads, IT teams, software engineers, customer service representatives, logistic teams, drivers and patients. The goal was to make their lives less stressful with technology. Meeting this many people taught me how to interact and be effective working. If you have ever read Dale Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends & Influence People, I was experiencing learning his methods and the effectiveness without even being aware of his book.
After the contract ended I decided I wanted to pursue Computer Science. I started at a completely underrated community college, Glendale Community College, in AZ. I was a complete beginner. I joined the S.T.E.M. club learned the ropes and soon became president of the club. I was also the VP of the engineering club where we established a inter-college drone racing league. We built, coded and flew drones with other local community colleges. I knew so little and know that I still have plenty to learn. I am humbled daily on how much there is to learn out there.
It is exciting, the more my skills grow, the more the universe opens up. Right now I am a junior at ASU and driving for Lyft to try to survive financially. My goal now is to do my best to learn the ropes at my new internship to be able to provide the most value possible . Deloitte, Thank you so much for giving me a chance to join your team!
